The Domaine de Chantilly's "Hamlet"

A restored cottage of the Chantilly Hamlet ©Martine Savart / Cottage of the Chantilly Hamlet

Chantilly's royal "Hamlet" has regained all of its original 18th-century charm...

Following its splendid restoration, the "Hamlet" was reopened to visitors in October 2008. Originally comprising seven rustic cottages, it was built in 1775 and is thought to have inspired Queen Marie Antoinette for her Trianon Hamlet at Versailles.
Two small houses were destroyed during the French Revolution. The remaining cottages - the dining room, the sitting room, the billiards room, the kitchen and the watermill - were left in a pitiable state.
During the 19th century, the Duke of Aumale carried out several series of restoration work. In 2006, the Foundation for the Preservation and Development of the Domaine de Chantilly completed the hamlet's restoration.

The wonderfully picturesque Hamlet is nestled in the Anglo-Chinese section of the château grounds. You can now admire all of its 18th-century charm: half-timbering and thatched roofs crowned with irises... a real fairytale village ! Contrasting with the rustic exterior is the cottages' refined interior décor, for the hosting of fêtes galantes and elegant gala dinners. Take a moment to imagine yourself an illustrous guest, such as Emperor Joseph II or King Gustav III of Sweden who enjoyed frequenting the Hamlet. Finally, for an opportunity to enjoy fresh fruit paired with bowls of delicious Chantilly cream (the real thing!), be sure to stop by the watermill.
