A walk through Jean-Jacques Rousseau Park
Ermenonville's park is perfect for walking and relaxing...
The rich foliage of this magnificent English-style park is reflected in its numerous bodies of water. Did you know that it owes its name to the French philosopher who spent the last six weeks of his life here? He passed away in 1778 and was buried on the Isle of the Poplars. His original tomb, which can still be seen, became a cenotaph in 1794 when his remains were transferred to the Panthéon in Paris.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau Park, purchased in 1985 by the Oise Departmental Council, is but a small section of the park that once surrounded the Château d ’Ermenonville.
Created in 1765 by Marquis René de Girardin, Ermenonville's park is representative of the irregular, picturesque gardens fashionable in England during the second half of the 18th century. The English-garden style is characterized by a natural transition to the countryside and the construction of romantic installations that serve to punctuate the walk.
In this park, you won't find perfectly trimmed hedges or rectilinear perspectives. Here, nature is given free reign to flourish and blossom... or so it would seem, for the genius of the gardener lies in his ability to surprise strollers, with views of the surrounding countryside and garden installations hidden behind groves of trees: the Naiads' Grotto, the waterfall, the Temple of Philosophy, the Altar of Reverie...
Crossed by two streams and dotted with ponds, Jean-Jacques Rousseau Park is a haven in which to philosophize, to meditate upon life and happiness...
